THE REAL WORLD OF FIJI The Fiji islands have been called the friendliest places in the world. In his trips to make this movie in these Islands, Rick Howard found this to be true. It hasn't always been this way though, for in past centuries these were known as the terrifying cannibal islands of the South Pacific. Any unfortunate shipwrecked sailor or devout missionary who came to the Fiji Islands in years past, had a good chance of ending up in a big pot being cooked and served for dinner, to a whole tribe of hungry warriors, chiefs, priests and even children. Rick made two trips to Fiji and he experienced the magic of these islands both on land, under the sea, and from above in helicopters. He also found ways to look into the past and tell stories about the days of cannibalism...

http://www.turtlefiji.com/Blog/81/drawn-to-paradise-the-history-of-fiji The majority of Fiji’s 332 islands and over 500 islets were formed through volcanic activity starting around 150 million years ago. To this day, some geothermal activity still occurs on the islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni. The first Fijians arrived between 5,000 and 3,000 years ago. According to Fijian legend, Chief Lutunasobasoba assisted by his General Degei led an armada of large, double hulled, canoes from the west. The eventually landed in what is now known as the Mamanuca Island chain in the western division of the Fijian Islands. Archeological evidence shows that the Lapita, Polynesian, and Melanesian people all settled the islands of Fiji and that from Fiji, some of these people went on to settle Samoa, To...

He also found ways to look into the past and tell stories about the days of cannibalism, and even how the sailors on the H. M. S. Bounty were almost captured and eaten after their infamous mutiny. Under the leadership Fletcher Christian, Captain William Bligh was put adrift with eighteen sailors in a small boat and they almost ended up in one of those big pots being cooked for dinner on one of the Fiji Islands. On Rick's first trip to the Fiji islands he was part of a scuba diving group from Malibu California. On this trip the group dove on the spectacular coral reefs around a private island, Waya, that was controlled by it's chief and his counsel. After the divers were granted permission to dive by the chief, they found the most beautiful under sea scenery and reef fish Rick has ever filmed. On his second trip Rick did more diving and visited native villages for cava ceremonies, road on a canoe up a jungle river to beautiful water fall where Fijian men dove from the high cliffs., Then you'll take a sea cruise, island hopping with Rick on a famous sailboats named The Seaspray. You'll even visit the island where Tom Hanks filmed his movie Castaway. You will experience all of this and more with Rick Howard in this movie; THE REAL WORLD OF FIJI.

According to Fijian legend, Chief Lutunasobasoba assisted by his General Degei led an armada of large, double hulled, canoes from the west. The eventually landed in what is now known as the Mamanuca Island chain in the western division of the Fijian Islands. Archeological evidence shows that the Lapita, Polynesian, and Melanesian people all settled the islands of Fiji and that from Fiji, some of these people went on to settle Samoa, Tonga and even Hawaii. Fiji had a strong tribal culture, and clashes between neighboring tribes often broke out. Fijian developed a reputation in the south pacific as fierce warriors, and skilled sailors who inspired awe among other island people. The Dutch explorer Abel Tasman first spotted Fiji in 1643, but the first Europeans to establish colonies in Fiji didn’t do so until the early 1800’s. In 1874, Fiji became a colony of the United Kingdom. As the first British governor of Fiji, Arthur Charles Hamilton-Gordon, adopted a policy disallowing the use of native labor or any interference in their culture or way of life. Instead, the British brought in indentured servants from India to work the sugar plantations the British had established. (To this day, 38% of the inhabitants of Fiji are of Indian descent). After World War II, the United Kingdom started to prepare Fiji for autonomy, and in 1970 Fiji was granted its independence and became the Dominion of Fiji. In 1987, Fiji underwent 2 military coups and emerged from the second as the Republic of Fiji. In 1997, Fiji became the Republic of the Fiji Islands after a new constitution was established and Fiji was readmitted into the Commonwealth of Nations. Fiji underwent another coup in 2000, and then another in 2006. In 2009 the Fiji Court of Appeal ruled the 2006 coup to have been illegal. A new constitution was put in place in 2013, and a general election was held in September of 2014. For almost 5,000 years people have come to Fiji to bask in the beautiful sun drenched beaches, and experience a south pacific paradise unlike any other place. We invite you to come to Fiji, and explore the natural beauty of Fiji’s Yasawa Island Chain in the Western Division. Fiji’s Turtle Island Resort is the ultimate in luxury and accommodates just 14 couples at a time on its 500 acre island assuring you the privacy you deserve. I spent a little under 5 months in Fiji this past fall semester and I don't think there's any better way to show everyone what went on then to try to fit hours worth of footage in 5 minutes. Here's the answer to some of the questions I've gotten since being back in the states: - Fiji is a chain of about 300 islands located in the Pacific Ocean. The countries in closest proximity are Australia and New Zealand. - The national languages are English and Fijian. - Fiji's white sand beaches and crystal clear, blue waters attracts a giant number of tourists every year. - The university I attended, The University of the South Pacific, is located in the capitol city, Suva, and is the home to students from countries all over the Pacific and other island nations. - The culture, some say, is similar to Hawaiian Indigenous culture. Villages still play a vital role in the country's society as a whole. Bonus discoveries I made while living there: - Free wifi is not a right, it's a privilege. - Don't underestimate the debilitating affects of diarrhea. - Fijians are some of the nicest (women primarily) and some of the most annoying (men primarily) people you will ever meet. - Some things like homemade crafts and local produce are dirt cheap, but other things like nutella and chocolate cost an arm and a leg. - Nothing ever gets fully dry because the humidity is choking. - Mosquitos, frogs, and lizards; you can't live with them, you can't live without them. I could go on and on, but if you have a travel bucket list, whether your an adult or student or anything in between, make sure you put Fiji on there because it's truly an experience of a life time. P.S. I also went to New Zealand for mid semester break with my roommates. I only have 12 words about NZ: GO, WHETHER ITS TOMORROW IN A YEAR OR 50 YEARS, JUST GO.
